5 New Years Resolutions for School

5 New Year's Resolutions for School Happy New Year! You may be already kicking off your lifestyle-related resolutions by hitting the gym, cutting back on Facebook, or improving/eliminating any other frequent habits you want to change. Its good to get a solid start on these before you are back in school and overwhelmed with a brand new set of academic responsibilities. You should also spend this time, however, reflecting on one question: can you do better in school this year than you did last year? Although you are still in the midst of the same academic year you left off on in December, the new calendar year is reason enough to spark a change. Look at your previous academic performance and honestly ask yourself what you can do to improve it. This coming semester in the new year is a wide open opportunity for better attitudes and fresh methods to be applied to your studies. How can you make this semester better? Not only should you figure out how to make this semester better, you should figure out how to maintain those changes in the following school semesters. What do you have to do now to make it a real challenge for you next New Years to land on a list of resolutions? If you do it right this time, youll find very few study habits that need to be modified in the future. The number one resolution you should make is to permanently keep the ones you make now. Take into account some of these encouraged resolutions for an improved school year: #1: Use a calendar/planner If youre not already using one, use one. If you do use one, you could probably use it better. Many students own a planner but leave it under a mess of books in their backpack far too often with the occasional scribble in it. A planner is useless when no regular attention is given to it. Once you get into the habit of writing every single homework assignment, exam day, and project due date into this book, youll be amazed at how much less you procrastinate and how much more on the ball you can be in approaching these responsibilities. Take it seriously to the point where youre checking it constantly. With such a dependable source for your schedule and tasks, youll rarely miss a deadline again and wonder how you ever lived without it. Here are some great tips on keeping and using a calendar. #2: Do not miss class for no good reason Especially for college students, skipping class once in awhile can be very tempting and seemingly easy to do, but its just not a good idea. Unless you are legitimately sick or have an actual emergency of some sort, follow the rule of thumb and just go to class. Even if youre under the impression that nothing important will be covered and you can afford to miss it, always err on the side of caution and go. Teachers could always change their lesson plans at the last minute or have a strict attendance policy that could cost you a letter grade. But even more importantly, you should attend class so you can guarantee you get a good handle on the material. Each class is designed for you to get something out of it, and that face-to-face interaction with the teacher is extremely valuable and more helpful than simply attempting to figure out concepts on your own. You may also want to check out these tips on how to participate in a class discussion. #3: Actually do your homework assignments Stop being sluggish and really get those assignments done. When you put some real effort into them, youll understand why the teacher assigned them to you in the first place. Even if it just seems like busy work, put the appropriate amount of thought into the task because its still one step closer to comprehending class material. Youll feel much more accomplished and proud once you actually complete those assignments fully and thoroughly. The point is to work on them as your teacher intended rather than doing just enough to get by. Needless to say, youll see far better results if you do what the teacher asked this is ultimately a big favor to you. #4: Do not solely rely on Spark Notes Going off the point of legitimately completing homework assignments, do yourself an even bigger favor and stop depending on Spark Notes or any other type of cliff notes. These can be good resources for further analysis after reading a book, but they should never be an entire substitute. Although youve probably heard this lecture a hundred times and decided to look past it, a great resolution to make would be to take it seriously. There is no way you can actually grasp the concept and underlying themes of a story without carefully reading it on your own. We all have busy schedules and reading lengthy novels is certainly time-consuming, but putting in the required effort will truly pay off when its time to write a paper or take a quiz. Reading the entire thing and avoiding shortcuts is a great promise to make to yourself. #5: Take a real interest in class material All of these resolutions will be a lot easier to carry through if you actually invest in what you are learning. Treat your classes this year as more than just grades to attain and credits to complete. Each of them has something valuable to offer and you should take advantage of that. Begin each course of the semester with an open mind and genuine interest in what the teacher is laying out for you in the syllabus. New skills and impressive knowledge will come to you quicker when youre really motivated and not trying so hard to convince yourself to listen. Recognize how lucky you are to have this opportunity to sit in so many different classes with so many different teachers. Worst case, you dont enjoy the subject matter but at least have authentically learned something new. You may also want to check out these 6 test prep mantras to love by in the new year. Now, just think do you want better results in school this year? This is the way to get them. Lay down the law for yourself by creating your own rules in the form of these resolutions. These promises are for you and you only. Dont let yourself down and dont cheat yourself out of an improved academic performance. The new year can bring a lot of positive changes; make sure school habits are included!

There are many institutes who do not efficiently provide their students the proper care and attention that is needed for any of the weak students for better future. A good institute makes it a point to provide each student an individual teacher so that the teacher can properly attend the student and solve all the problems that come up in the mind of the student. When the weak points of a student are detected and the teacher works properly on the weak areas of the student, it is quite normal that the student will shine high. One last feature that you should look for in an institute before finalizing any one is that does it provide you with the English homework help as well. Every grammar or every poem cannot be understood by you who is given for your home from your school.   Many institutes or online tutors are there who overlook the matter and thus afterwards the students have to suffer to a large extent. As we dive into 2016, its a great time to reflect on your goals as a singer. Do you want to be a famous singer someday? Do you want to start small, and overcome your stage fright? Do you want to learn how to write a song? Whatever your goals may be, theres a lot you can learn from the big artists of the past year. Here are some ways you can incorporate their major successes into your own New Year’s singer resolutions! Artist: Hozier What You Can Learn: Collaborate If you want to become a well-known singer within the music industry, your work is never done. Once you get yourself out there, you need to keep  yourself out there! To get extra buzz, many artists create more performance opportunities by collaborating with other singers which can be especially effective if its unexpected pairing. You can learn a lot from Irish singer Hozier; check out his electrifying Grammy performance with Annie Lennox here: On a smaller scale, you could ask another singer to be your duet partner for karaoke, or perhaps get a small group of singers together and put together a cabaret night! Artist:  Adele What You Can Learn: Know when to rest It’s tempting to say “yes” to everything, especially when you are just starting out. It’s great to be passionate about singing, but remember you’re human! You only get one voice, so be careful with it. Just look at  Adele, the hottest artist of the year: she underwent major vocal surgery a few years ago, yet didnt jump back into performing right away because she wanted to take her time healing. Not only thatâ€" she has also become a proud mom and wanted to put family first! Make it a goal to have balance in your life. Feeling worn out after a run of another musical, even though there’s another one holding auditions for vocalists next week? Ask yourself if you need a break, and really listen to your body. Artist:  Taylor Swift What You Can Learn: Market yourself You may have heard the advice “you gotta have a gimmick!” Thats originally from the musical “Gypsy”, and its often true! Being a talented singer is one thing, but what makes you interesting to your audience? Singers need to be savvy about marketing themselves. Taylor Swift happens to be brilliant at this. We should all look to her as an expert on a variety of things! She has revamped her image completely (country to pop!), she’s always out and about with her huge fan base, and how about that “squad” of hers? Ok, so a lot of that’s pretty hard to do if you’re well not Taylor. But heres what you CAN do: get out there in your community! Offer to sing at fundraisers, nursing homes, and so on. Show that you’re a singer with character who cares about a few causes. And yes, why not build up a “squad” of your own? Make this squad filled with trusted accompanists, like voice teachers, dancers, and other singers. Connecting with a group of like-minded artists is essential for your growth! Artists:  Tori Kelly and Shawn Mendes What You Can Learn: Keep plugging away YouTube is where today’s singer hopes to be noticed. But youll want to have a strategy in mind. Are your videos high quality? Are you posting good content? How often? What are you doing to promote your music videos? How about your audience what are you doing to grow them? Are you cross-promoting across other social media channels, like Twitter and Instagram? These are the important questions to ask. To get inspired, take a look at the success story of Tori Kelly! She was eliminated from American Idol, but took matters into her own hands and built up a huge YouTube following. Shawn Mendes, another great artist to learn from, got his start on Vine and now has a top 10 hit and a recording contract. Of course, youre not restricted to finding an audience online, or with one of those platforms specifically. The key is to keep plugging awayâ€" in any medium! Whether it’s YouTube or a local coffee shop, keep giving your best to your audience. Now put your learning into practice! No matter what your resolution is as a singer, remember to bring your best vocally every time. Look at what other successful and famous singers are doing, and find what you can learn from them. Working with a great voice teacher is also key he or she can help you become a better singer, and may even have insider advice or a network to connect you with. Happy New Year, and happy singing! Tutorfair Dyslexia Training Day

Tutorfair Dyslexia Training Day “Great starter. Just leaves you wanting more!” 25 of our top tutors received top-notch training on how to best-serve students with dyslexia. They spent the day with British Dyslexia Association instructor Brenda Ferrie learning about what it’s like to have dyslexia, how students with dyslexia learn, and how to support these students in a one-to-one context. Tutors who attended our first ever dyslexia training day teach everything from English, literacy and foreign languages, to maths and science. They feel more confident and more informed about their students’ needs. One of the key takeaways from the day was the importance of early intervention for students with learning difficulties, and the serious impact that a tutor can have on a child’s future by shaping how they approach learning for life. Our tutors know how to play to the strengths of dyslexia, in addition to addressing weaknesses. For example, while dyslexia is associated with auditory, memory, and speed problems, it is also associated with better than average visualising, lateral thinking, verbal communication and problem solving skills. As such, tutors learned that processes, such as maths, should be taught with visuals rather than oral explanations. Reading and spelling should be taught orthographically, not just phonologically. The black text helps us understand how difficult reading can be if you had dyslexia. (The red text is the interpretation) Tutors are also familiar with common signs of dyslexia, something they may be in a better position to spot than a classroom teacher. Students with visual troubles may rub their eyes, complain of their eyes being tired, or cover one eye while trying to read. Students may, more generally, struggle to recall instructions, or doing things in order (as sequencing is difficult). To address this sequencing difficulty (trouble putting things in order), tutors were given a very useful planning strategy. By creating a diagram with 6 boxes, and labelling them “start, Next….End”, tutors give students the space to write down ideas as they occur, rather than forcing students to think in order from beginning to end. This allows students to hold on to and use their creative ideas instead of losing a good idea because they didn’t think of it at the ‘right time’. This visual lay-out also allows students to easily see when their plan is complete, or what has yet to be done. Armed with specific strategies and a deep understanding of the causes and processes of dyslexia, our tutors are prepared to give students the support and knowledge they need to make the most of their future and fully access their education today, tomorrow, and for life. “This morning gave me unexpected insight into living and learning with dyslexia. I now have increased awareness and understanding of how it might feel to be coping with learning with dyslexia. For this reason alone the session was rewarding and well worth attending. Thank you for arranging this for us.” “Thank you for organising this; having access to Continued Professional Development through Tutorfair is definitely something that will make me recommend you to parents looking for a tutor/fellow teachers looking for tutoring work.” “A real eye opener for me as I...am coming across it more and more and so this session was invaluable. Thank you.”

Chicago Math Tutoring Program Delivers Big Changes

Photo by Whitten Sabbatini for The New York Times If you have ever questioned whether individualized, intensive tutoring and positive relationships can make a difference, Match Educations ground-breaking program in Chicago is more proof that its absolutely possible. A column in The New York Times spotlighted some of the incredible results achieved by the math program for 1,300 students in 12 public high schools. Developed by Match Education in Boston, which seeks to correct the “mismatch” in academic preparedness common among minority students in impoverished areas, the program provides two-on-one math tutoring for hour-long sessions every day. In the first year, on average, students who received Match tutoring and mentoring increased their math learning gains by 1 to 2 years more than the control group, and their test scores on the National Assessment of Educational Progress math exam reduced the black-white test score gap by a third. Furthermore, the tutoring also reduced math course failure rates by 50%, and overall course failure rates by 25%. By helping students in math every day, tutors are building students confidence so they are less likely to fail other classes or drop out of school, and also less likely to be arrested for violent crimes. According to the programs executive director Barbara Algarin, These students can make remarkable progress when they appreciate that their tutor is in their corner. The math connection leads to better study skills and a love of learning. Grades improve across the board. This column cites an issue that both HEART and Match address: It is difficult for teachers alone to provide the amount of individualized attention needed by students who are performing multiple years below grade level in math. Teachers must go back and re-teach a variety of critical math skills that were missed in previous years before their students can comprehend grade-level content. “Just a few years of this type of intervention could bring almost all students up to grade level,” said Jens Ludwig, a professor of social service administration at the University of Chicago and the director of its Crime Lab, in the New York Times report. “By then they can benefit from what’s being taught in regular classes and have real hope for a high school diploma.” This column also states that “American parents spend $7 billion annually on tutoring, in some cases as much as $400 an hour.” Match offers a relatively cheap solution: tutors earn $16,000 per year. To Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who plans to expand the program, the lesson is plain. “What this shows is, don’t ever throw the towel in on the kids,” the mayor said.
